Not tax, legal or accounting advice
Everything on W9Form.org is general educational information about a federal tax form. It is not tax advice, legal advice, or accounting advice, and reading it creates no professional relationship of any kind between you and us. Your own circumstances matter enormously to the right answer, and they happen to be the one thing we cannot see: entity classification, worker status, trust taxation, cross-border withholding and settlement allocation all turn on operating agreements, contracts, elections and filing history that sit in your files rather than ours. A page written for everybody is written for nobody in particular. So take your actual facts to a certified public accountant, an enrolled agent, or a tax attorney licensed in your jurisdiction before you act on anything here.
Not affiliated with the IRS
W9Form.org is a private, independent publication. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or connected to the Internal Revenue Service, the U.S. Department of the Treasury, the Social Security Administration, or any other government agency. The .org top-level domain carries no official status.
The authoritative source for Form W-9 is irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-form-w-9. Where this site and the IRS differ, the IRS is right.
We host unmodified copies of the IRS Form W-9 PDF and its instructions because it is faster than sending you elsewhere for them. Those documents are works of the U.S. federal government and sit in the public domain, so anyone may copy them. Hosting them does not imply IRS endorsement of this site.
Accuracy and currency
We work from primary IRS sources and put a review date on every page, which helps but does not make a page permanently true. Tax law moves. Thresholds get indexed, forms get revised, penalty amounts drift upward, and a paragraph that was exactly right last filing season can be stale by this one.
- The current form revision when this page was last reviewed was Rev. March 2024.
- Rates, thresholds and indexed penalty amounts change. Verify anything numerical against a current IRS source.
- Nothing here is a guarantee of completeness or of a particular outcome.
- We make no representation that the information applies to your state, which may have its own rules.
- If you spot an error, tell us and we will correct it. Editorial policy
The worksheet tool
The W-9 preparation worksheet is an educational aid. It runs entirely in your browser, transmits nothing, and stores nothing. It is not the official IRS form and not a substitute Form W-9; its output cannot be submitted in place of the real form. The validation checks behind it are general ones, written for the common cases, and they cannot see the election you filed years ago or the way your operating agreement allocates income.
You remain responsible for what you put on the form you sign.
External links
We link to IRS.gov and other third-party sites for reference. We do not control those sites, are not responsible for their content, and linking to them is not an endorsement. Check the domain in your address bar before you type anything anywhere: the genuine one is irs.gov, and the phishing operations that imitate it are patient and convincing.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, W9Form.org and its contributors accept no liability for any loss or damage arising from reliance on the information on this site, including any penalty, interest, withholding or additional tax. Your use of this site is at your own risk and on the terms set forth in our terms of use.
No confidential relationship
Sending us an email does not create a professional relationship, and it does not make what you send confidential or privileged. Nothing you write to us is protected the way a conversation with your own accountant or attorney would be, so keep taxpayer identification numbers, completed forms and anything else sensitive out of it.
